About EU Expats
EU Expats is a place-by-place guide for people who have decided to move to Portugal and now need to choose where. We compare eight bases: Lisbon, Porto, Cascais and Estoril, the Algarve, Madeira, the Silver Coast, Braga and Coimbra.
Who it helps
Lifestyle movers: remote workers, families, early retirees and professionals relocating for work. If you are weighing coast against city, or school choice against rent, the guides and the quiz are built for you.
Our editorial approach
Every guide covers the same points: who the place suits, climate feel, pace, international schools, airport access, English level, rent pressure and downsides. We write downsides as plainly as the upsides.
The quiz uses 1 to 5 scores that are our editorial judgement. We publish the full matrix and the weighting rules on the homepage so you can see exactly why a place ranks where it does.
How we check and date facts
We use official Portuguese sources first, such as Statistics Portugal (INE), Portal das Finanças, AIMA and the Diário da República, and list every source on the page that uses it. We do not publish rent figures we cannot trace to a source.
Each page shows the date it was last reviewed. Rules on visas, tax and residence change, so check the official source before you act.
Commercial relationships
Some pages link to specialist services we have a commercial relationship with. We only link where we think the service genuinely helps.
